Hey Guys-
Did any of you see that performance? The drummer, I don't know who, was playing a tone box of some sort with mallets. Does anyone know what this is called? I really liked the effect he was getting and I felt that it was perfect for the music. I could see myself using it sometime in certain situations. Thanks in advance for any info you all can help with.

Didn't see the performance(dang it!) so i can't help you out. But i am a real big fan of what he does backing up Norah. I really like his style.

Did he have a roadie? Please put my box over there sir.
I saw Ritchie Garcia play a wooden box as well. Really neat. Kinda like banging on those Indian Clay pots.

Was it Brian Blade or her touring drummer?
And I didn't see the show, but that box might be a log drum of sorts...

Possibly a wooden "African slit box" [sorry, can't recall the 'official' name]...Bruford used to play one of those with mallets around the early to mid '80's on his hybrid kit set up [the 1 w the Octabans, etc]....

I did no catch that show but maybe it was a cajon. Did it look something like these here? (Click "Cajones" and "Log Drums")

Greetings ...
having listened to the album (the first song has the drummer playing on these; terrific song, by the way), I would guess that he is using a slit drum or "tongue drum" ... wooden slits carved out of a single piece of wood, tuned and placed upon a resonating box ... usually played with soft rubber mallets ...
Michael Thiele makes some really nice tongue drums
http://www.africantreasures.net/drums/tongue-drums.asp
and there are a couple of good-looking "slit drums" out there as well
e.g. at http://www.jamesjonesinstruments.com...slitdrums.html
If you find a good one, these drums are extremely enjoyable to play; therapeutic, actually, and quite tonal and all that ...
Cheers,
PE

P.S. just checked out "SingleStrk"'s link ... I think he's correct, and those look like some very nice "log drums" as well!
